El Salvador Criollo -cow- El Salvador

El Salvador Criollo
(most common name in English)

(most common name):
Criolla
(transboundary/brand name):
Argentine Criollo
(local/other name):
Salvadoran Criollo

A substantial population of Criollo cattle existed in El Salvador until 1960 when zebus and other foreign breeds (mainly Holstein and Brown Swiss) were first imported.

After that, to meet an export demand for a larger beef animal, Brahman bulls were used extensively on the Criollo cows. Today purebred Criollo cattle are scarce.

In the early 1980s, four Criollo bulls were imported from Honduras in order to re-establish the local breed.

The El Salvador Criollo coat color is usually tan, sometimes black or black speckled.
