Ferrandaise -heifer calf- France

Ferrandaise
(most common name)

(local/other name):
• Ferrandais (English)
• La race Ferrandaise
• La race Ferrando-Forezienne
• La race du Puy-de-Dôme

The Ferrandaise is a local breed from the mountains of Forez in the department of Puy-de-Dôme — which is in the center of France.

The Ferrandaise was disfavored at the beginning of the 19th century because of its range of coat colors due to the influence of the Simmental, Normande and Breton Black Pied. Finally, the red pied pattern (barrée rouge) was stipulated in 1899. In 1905 the herdbook was established and from then on they were bred pure.
