Wannan
皖南牛
(most common name)
The Wannan can be found along both banks of the Yangtze river in Anhui province, China.
Wannan are strong, healthy cattle that are very well adapted to the humidity of the subtropical climate of the area. Farmers are said to pay considerable attention to their breeding and care.
The Wannan is small-bodied with a relatively pronounced hump and has a coat ranging from brown to black with a dorsal stripe.
All Wannan Y chromosomes are zebu and their mtDNA is taurine and zebu. Microsatellite studies have placed the Wannan closest to, and possibly the origin of, the Dabieshan (which is geographically close).
Because the Wannan has the highest genetic diversity in a cluster of similar breeds, it is thought to also perhaps be the origin of:
• Wenling Humped
• Hainan
• Guangfeng
• Minnan
