The Serrano is bred in the southwest of Salta (a province in northwest Argentina) and is the best developed type of both the Sierra Criollo and the Argentine Criollo.

The Salta province surrounds parts of the Andes Mountains, the Yungas forests and the semi-arid lowland plain region known as Gran Chaco (also called Dry Chaco, the Chaco Plain).
