Lucerna -cow- Colombia

Lucerna
(most common name)

The Lucerna is a composite breed that originated during 1937–1956 and named after the Hacienda Lucerna where it was developed in the department of Valle del Cauca (Cauca Valley). It was the first composite breed to be formed in South America, with a composition today of:

40% Holstein-Friesian
30% Milking Shorthorn
30% Hartón del Valle

Since 1956, selection has been focused on dairy aptitudes. Stores of semen are kept for commercial use (rather than explicitly for conservation). The Lucerna is also known for high fertility.
