Limpurger
(most common name)
(transboundary/brand name)
(local/other name):
• Leintaler
The Limpurger is named after the county of Limpurg — which became part of the Kingdom of Württemburg in 1803, which then became a German state from 1805 to 1918, and is now part of the German state of Baden-Württemberg.
The Limpurger started as a triple-purpose breed. Farm mechanization in the first half of the 20th century removed the need for draught which was one of the breed’s main functions. Importation of Simmental to replace them also decreased their numbers.
The Limpurger was finally at risk of extinction by absorption into the Gelbvieh until concerted efforts starting in the 1980s were made to restore its numbers.
As of 2019, their population total is listed as 762, with 46 breeding males and 716 breeding females.
