The Hissar was developed in the Punjab region — a geographical and cultural region found in eastern Pakistan and northern India.
The following breeds played a part in the origination of the Hissar breed:
• Kankrej
• Gir
• Nagori
• Ongole
• Tharparkar
• Krishna Valley
• Hariana
The Hissar most resembles the Kankrej and its color tends to be a steel grey.
When India and Pakistan separated in 1956 (with the Punjab being divided between them) — Pakistan began establishing pure breeding farms of the Hissar and the breed there was re-named ‘Hissari’.
NOTE: As of 2018, DAD-IS no longer reports the ‘Hissari’ existing in Pakistan.
