The Criollo de la Sierra Madre Occidental is a subtype of Mexican Criollo that clusters with the Texas Longhorn on the basis of microsatellites.

The Sierra Madre Occidental is a major mountain range system belonging to the North American Cordillera. This system runs northwest–southeast through northwestern and western Mexico, and along the Gulf of California.

The entire American Cordillera is an almost continuous sequence of western mountain ranges that form the ‘backbone’ of all the Americas (North, South and Central).

The Criollo de la Sierra Madre Occidental is raised primarily for meat on family farms and by small-scale producers.

(Spanish) cordilleras = mountain ranges
