Brazilian Polled
(most common name in English)

(most common name):
Mocho Nacional
(local/other name):
• Caracu (variedade Mocho)
local/other name (English):
• Brazilian Polled
• Caracu (polled variety)

The Brazilian Polled probably originated from polled Criollo cattle (due to spontaneous mutation) that were then selected during the 1800s and eventually made into a government herd in 1911. This government herd became highly inbred and was disbanded in 1969.

Eight cows and three bulls were all that were left by 1983. Using seven cows and one bull, a new government herd was founded. By 1992, the breed had increased to 300 breeding cows and 35 sires.

There has been crossbreeding with the Caracu which is horned and phenotypically similar, however these animals are registered separately by the Associação Brasileira de Criadores de Caracu (Brazilian Association of Caracu Breeders).

(Portuguese) Mocho nacional = Polled national
