ANNOUNCER
Cows from Scotland? Today we are talking to the White Park.
SFX: moo
REPORTER
So, you’re from Antarctica.
WHITE PARK
No, I’m not.
REPORTER
Yes, you are.
WHITE PARK
No, I’m NOT.
REPORTER
Well, where else in the world could there be a white park?
WHITE PARK
We’re not talking about a plot of land with snow and ice all over it.
REPORTER
We’re not?
WHITE PARK
No. I’m a cow whose breed name happens to be White Park.
REPORTER
From Antarctica.
WHITE PARK
No, I’m not from Antarctica. As close as they can tell from my genes, I’m from Scotland.
REPORTER
You wear clothes?
WHITE PARK
Genes as in genetics, not jeans as in an article of clothing usually worn on the legs. Something, which I might add, you do not normally see on cattle.
REPORTER
Scotland, huh? So how come you don’t have a Scottish accent?
WHITE PARK
Because in the late 1930’s some White Park cattle were imported to Canada.
REPORTER
Then why don’t you have a Canadian accent?
WHITE PARK
Because some of their offspring ended up in the Bronx Zoo, but they couldn’t house wild cattle for the long term. So they were sold and moved to the King Ranch in Texas.
REPORTER
Then why don’t you have a Texas accent?
WHITE PARK
Because I don’t want one.
REPORTER
Oh. Well, how old are you as a breed?
WHITE PARK
White cattle with colored points are mentioned in Irish sagas dating back almost 2,000 years.
REPORTER
Are there a lot of you left?
WHITE PARK
Actually, no. Our current status is Critical and the beef industry needs us because we have high quality meat and we also increase the heterosis effects in crossbreeding systems.
REPORTER
Heterosis? What in the world is heterosis?
WHITE PARK
Heterosis is when you cross two genetically different plants or animals and get a better result such as superior vigor or size. Heterosis is also called hybrid vigor.
REPORTER
Does that explain your horns?
WHITE PARK
No, it explains why I’m now going to chase you away for being a pest.
REPORTER
I can take a hint! Really! I can take a hint!
WHITE PARK
Start running.
