ANNOUNCER

Cows from Australia? Today we're talking about the Murray Grey.

SFX: moo

REPORTER

Yes, it's time for a conversation with the Murray Grey, which originated in New South Wales, Australia. You've been branded as a sensible breed for profitable beef production. How does that make you feel?

MURRAY GREY

I'm proud. Murray Greys have been winning carcass competitions since the early 1970's, you know.

REPORTER

Yes, butchers have praised your breed for consistent high cutability and less wastage.

MURRAY GREY

It's true. And in 1962 fifty breeders banded together and formed the Murray Grey Beef Cattle Society of Australia. They just held a World Congress in Australia this past 2005 for Murray Grey breeders from around the world.

REPORTER

So we hear. I understand that during the conference sessions there were some comments about feed efficiency.

MURRAY GREY

Uh, yes. Uhm . . .

REPORTER

And there was also talk about forgetting personal disputes. Can you comment on that?

MURRAY GREY

I'd rather not. I try and stay out of those kinds of discussions. Makes for bad cud.

REPORTER

Excuse me?

MURRAY GREY

Cud. C - U - D. Cud. Food that has been regurgitated from the first of my four stomachs*. We cows like to sort of ruminate on the ruins of our rumen.

REPORTER

Your what?

MURRAY GREY

Our rumen. That's the official name for our first and largest stomach. Not that we cows named it that, of course.

REPORTER

I see. Any parting words for our listeners?

MURRAY GREY

Why certainly. Chew your cud wisely and stay grey everyone!

* CORRECTION: Bovines have only one stomach that has four chambers for digestion – the rumen, the reticulum, the omasum, and the abomasum. Also, the regurgitation occurs from the second chamber of their stomach (the reticulum). We lament this error in this initial batch of scripts for a live radio show. It will not be repeated in future scripts.
