Verbeterd Roodbont
(most common name)

(transboundary/brand name):
• Improved Red and White cattle
(local/other name):
• Verbeterd Roodbont Vleesras (VRV)
local/other name (English):
Dutch Improved Red Pied
• Improved Red and White
• Improved Red Pied Beef Breed

The Verbeterd Roodbont began with Meuse-Rhine-Yssel (MRY) bulls that were selected for doubled-muscling and then used for AI (artificial insemination) breeding in the MRY population.

This was done because the MRY has been influenced by the use of Red Holstein blood since the 1970s. This use has caused them to lose their beef qualities.

While the bulls in this recently derived breed are double-muscled — the cows can be either double-muscled or heavy muscled. (Some blood of foreign beef breeds has also been introduced.)

(Dutch) dik bil = thick buttock (i.e. double-muscled)
