Uruguayan Criollo
(local/other name)
(most common name):
• Criollo Uruguayo
The Uruguayan Criollo, on the basis of microsatellites, is genetically closer to other more southerly Criollo cattle breeds. This is because colonization came through Brazil and Río de la Plata (River Plate).
The rob(1;29) chromosomal translocation, known to depress bull fertility, has been detected in this breed but at low frequency. Frequencies of this condition in Criollo cattle are generally taken to be the result of founder effects.
A mitochondrial DNA variant previously found only in the Maronesa and Barrosa is also present in the Uruguayan Criollo.
