The Swedish Red-and-White began as an amalgamation of several local breeds and strains (both highland and lowland); these became known as the Red Pied Swedish (RSB Rödbrokig Svensk Boskap).
From 1847–1904, Ayrshires and Shorthorns were imported for upgrading.
• 1892 - Red Pied Swedish herdbook established
• 1899 - Swedish Ayrshire herdbook established
In 1928, the Red Pied Swedish was merged formally with the Swedish Ayrshire population to form the Swedish Red-and-White (also called SRB, Svensk Röd och Vit Boskap).
NOTE: After the two merged, a separate section in the herdbook was later opened for purebred Swedish Ayrshires.
Since 2003, the Swedish Red-and-White has become part of the European Red Dairy Breed (a cooperative of dairy breeds) and within this framework is known as the Swedish Red.
