The Qinghai Plateau yak is a domestic yak that also includes the ‘Long-hair-forehead yak’ type and is found in the province of Qinghai (located on the northeastern part of the Tibetan Plateau), Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture and Kazakhstan.
The Qinghai Plateau yak has conformation similar to the wild yak and epitomizes the so-called ‘plateau type’ being described as having:
• compact body
• large head
• wide horns
The Qinghai Plateau yak coat colors can include:
• a greyish backline and muzzle on a black or brown base
• unicolored chestnut
• unicolored grey
• spotted
• white (occasionally)
The Qinghai Plateau yak is found in the high pastures and steppes at elevations of 3,700–4,700 m (12,139–15,419 ft) ASL.
