The Østlandsk rødkolle began development during the late 19th century and became the dominant dairy breed in central Norway by the 1950s.

In 1961, the Østlandsk rødkolle was one of the first breeds to merge with the Norwegian Red. Only about ten cows remained by the 1980s. To restore numbers, Swedish Red Polled cattle were used. Currently, microsatellite studies have not found a demonstrably close affinity with the Swedish Red Polled; this might indicate that their admixture did not abolish the distinctiveness of the Østlandsk rødkolle.

About 70% of Østlandsk rødkolle cows are now kept in suckler herds. This does contribute to their commercial viability, however it also means a redirection of the breed away from its traditional dairy function.
