Nimari
(most common name)
(local/other name):
• Khargaon
• Khargoni
• Khurgoni
The Nimari was stated to show ‘an admixture of Gir and Khillari (Tapi Valley strains) breeds’ (Joshi and Phillips, 1953). Microsatellite studies confirm an affinity with Gir, but not Khillari.
Because the Nimari, for many years, has been such an excellent draught animal, physiological studies on two blood indicators of strenuous exercise have been performed (creatine kinase, CK; and lactic acid, LA) (Singh et al., 2011). Nimari and Malvi were compared (50 of each breed) measuring the time taken to complete standard ploughing and haulage tasks. The two breeds did not differ significantly.
The Nimari coat is generally red with splashes of white.
