Nanyang -bull- China

Nanyang
南阳牛
(most common name)

local/other name (Russian):
• Nan’yan

The Nanyang is an indigenous breed found in the region of Nanyang in Henan province. Its principal distribution points are the city of Nanyang and in the counties of Nanyang, Tanghe and Dengxian.

1982 - Nanyang herdbook established

The Nanjang is described as:
• yellow, red or yellow-and-white coat
• well-developed muscles
• thin skin
• fine hairs on their coat
• short horns with lateral pointing tips

In 2000, a government conservation project for the Nanyang was announced.

SNP studies have confirmed the Nanyang as being genetically close to the Jiaxian Red. Y chromosomes and mtDNA show the Nanyang having taurine and zebu affinity in both the male and female lines.

It is also believed that geographical proximity and their relative freedom from directional selection have made the Nanyang, Jinnan, Luxi and Qinchuan genetically close (with considerable within-breed microsatellite variation).
