The Mongolian is a Turano-Mongolian breed found in the Republic of Mongolia and also in Inner Mongolia (the Nei Mongol Autonomous Region of the Republic of China). In China, they are called Menggu.

The Mongolian is a triple-purpose breed used for milk, beef and work.

Microsatellites and PRP gene sequences show:
• Mongolian cattle are closely related to the Kazakh
• high variability (lack of consistency) for genes whose diversity might be related to disease resistance

The Mongolian is mostly taurine genetically. Zebu mtDNA is present in a small proportion and paternal lineages are all taurine in both the Republic of Mongolia and Inner Mongolia.

Turano-Mongolian, in reference to cattle, refers to a distinctive skull formation that includes:
• a wedge-shaped skull
• a depression on the frontal bone
• a narrow crown
• horns growing straight-up
