Miniature Hereford -bull- USA

Miniature Hereford
(most common name)

The Miniature Hereford began in the 1960s in Texas with Herefords selected for small size by Rust Largent. His aim was to produce more meat from the same area of land. Basically, small cattle eat less than full sized ones and can be a fed high corn ration at a much earlier age. Thus, the optimum slaughter weight is reached at 14 months compared to 22 months for regular sized steers.

The Miniature Hereford breed standard stipulates a maximum withers height at maturity of :
• 122 cm (48 in) for bulls
• 114 cm (45 in) for cows

The Miniature Hereford can be found in 40 states in the USA. Miniature Hereford cattle were exported to Australia in 1997.
