Lithuanian Light Grey
(most common name)
(local/other name):
• Lietuvos šemieji
The Lithuanian Light Grey is a rare breed known in Lithuania since the 16th century and is found mainly in the southeast and southwest of the country.
The Lithuanian Light Grey is usually a dairy breed with a coat of ash-grey, occasionally grey-blue. Sometimes the head and legs are almost white.
Genetically close to the Lithuanian Black Pied, pedigree studies have shown a Holstein component of 52.4% within the Lithuanian Light Grey. The breed has enough within-breed variability for effective selection based on both microsatellites and estimates of heritability. Formal conservation of the Lithuanian Light Grey began in 2001.
