The Islandska Mjölkurkýrinn is an authentic breed whose herdbook and breeding society was started in 1903.
All possible colors, and combinations of colors and markings, may be seen in their coats as there are six basic colors and over 100 color patterns (Kantanen et al., 2000a).
Most of the dairy herd are polled, but when there are horns (only 3–4% of the population now), their size and shape varies considerably.
