Haitian Criollo
(local/other name)
(most common name):
• Créole (French)
(transboundary/brand name):
• Creole
The Haitian Criollo began when Spanish cattle (later becoming Criollo cattle) arrived in the area of Haiti in 1493. Zebu and other European breeds were introduced in 1949, basically ending their purity as a breed (although there may still be a few purebreds raised on the island in isolated areas).
The Haitian Criollo is a small, triple-purpose animal used for work, dairy and beef production. Many are tan with dark hair around the muzzle. Some are black and black speckled.
