Guabalá -cow- Panama

Guabalá
(most common name)
(transboundary/brand name)

The Guabalá originates from Spanish cattle introduced into Panama in 1519.

The Guabalá can be found in the Remedios and Tolé region in the Chiriquí Province and also in the El Valle de Antón area in the Coclé Province.

The Guabalá, the most genetically distinct of the Criollo breeds, is related to the Guaymí but is a distinct breed as confirmed by microsatellites.

Guabalá phenotypic characteristics include:
• coat colors of red, red pied and blond
• short and shiny hair
• robust appearance
• well proportioned hindquarters
• a large, elongated head
• small ears
• long horns with sharp tips

There is a conservation herd of Guabalá in the Ollas Arriba Zone in Capira, in the Panamá Oeste Province (West Panama Province) under the responsibility of IDIAP (Institute of Agricultural Research of Panama).
