Garvonesa
(most common name)
(transboundary/brand name)
(local/other name):
• Chamusca
• Raça Bovina Garvonesa
The Garvonesa is thought to be an intermediate form between the Alentejana and the Algarvia; microsatellites show a close relationship with the Algarvia.
The Garvonesa was bred for its draught power and at one time faced extinction due to the invention and use of tractors and modernization in general.
Concerted efforts by the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina (PNSACV) have saved the breed thus far. Today, the herdbook and Garvonesa breed is managed by the Associação de Agricultores do Campo Branco (AACB).
