Enderby Island -cow- New Zealand

Enderby Island
(most common name)

The Enderby Island is a descendant of shorthorned cattle that were brought to Enderby Island (one of the Sub-Antarctic Islands of New Zealand) by farmers in the 1890’s. The farming failed and the cattle were abandoned.

So, the Enderby Island was not a breed — it was a locally developed population with the term ‘developed’ being used in the broadest sense. They were more a locally ‘surviving’ population.

The Enderby Island cattle today are the results of cloning the last cow (who had been removed) after the rest were exterminated for the purposes of habitat conservation in 1992/3.

Her name was ‘Lady’.
