The Chinese Black and White was developed primarily from imported North American Holsteins, Dutch Black Pieds and various Dutch Friesians (mainly from Germany and Japan) that were crossed with local cattle.

The Chinese Black and White is the focus of a Chinese dairy industry located largely around major cities in eastern China (e.g. Shanghai).
