Chinampo
(local/other name)
(most common name):
• Criollo del desierto de Baja California
(local/other name):
• Criollo de Baja California
• Frijolillo
The Chinampo is a subtype of Mexican Criollo whose numbers are declining due to crossing with zebu.
There is confusion in sources as to coat coloration:
• (Felius, 1995) usually red or red pied, occasionally entirely black or beige
• (Mason, Encyclopedia 2016; DAD-IS, 2021)
usually white with black or red markings
• Pictures provided by Dr. José Luis Espinoza Villavicencio show black, black and white, red and white, and blond.
Basically, one third of the population has a uniform color, while the rest show a combination of two or three colors.
