Bulgarian Rhodope Cattle are a recently developed breed with a herbook established in 1989. They are named after the Rhodope Mountains (a mountain range in southeastern Europe, mostly in southern Bulgaria with the remainder in Greece).

Bulgarian Rhodope Cattle began with crossings between Rhodope shorthorn cattle (a brachyceros type), local Bulgarian Grey cattle, Sofia Brown cattle, Oberinntal cattle and more. Later, the Jersey was used the most often.
