Bordelaise
(most common name)
(local/other name):
• Bordelais
• La race Bordelaise
The Bordelaise originated in the marshes of Gironde near Bordeaux.
It is a variety of Breton cattle that was developed during the 1800s — with the mixing of the Breton Black Pied and Dutch cattle that had been imported during the 1700s.
The Bordelaise was almost driven to extinction by the importation and use of Dutch Friesians during the 1900s.
A small herd is currently being kept on a Conservatoire found in the suburbs of Bordeaux, near Bruges.
