In 1969, the first Maine-Anjou were imported into Canada and then introduced to the United States through artificial insemination. The first Maine-Anjou Society (also incorporated in 1969) included both USA and Canadian members. In 1971, the name was changed to the International Maine-Anjou Association and in 1976, the name was changed again to the American Maine-Anjou Association.

A black coat color tends to be favored in the USA and the Black Maine-Anjou has been recognized as a separate, recently developed breed in the USA since 1978.
