In 1981, a breed society was formed to conserve and promote the variety of cattle colors found in Wales that lacked the structure of a formal breed organization. It is named: Ancient Cattle of Wales (Gwarthheg Hynafol Cymru).
The Belted Welsh Black is an authentic color variety of the Welsh Black.
At one time, they either went under the general name of ‘Blanket cattle’ — or — they were named after the historic counties in Wales where they were found:
• Caernarvonshire
• Merionethshire
• Denbighshire
