The Froment du Léon is an ancient Breton land race that is similar to the Guernsey and was first described as a distinct breed in 1859. (The Bretons were a Celtic ethnic group native to Brittany.)

The Froment du Léon, a dairy breed, can be found in northern Brittany and produces a very rich yellow milk with a high fat content (5.49%) and large fat globules suitable for butter making.

1907 - Froment du Léon herdbook established
1981 - Froment du Léon breed society re-established; conservation program begun

The Froment du Léon has a light or dark tan (froment) coat color, with or without white patches.
