Alistana-Sanabresa
(most common name)
(transboundary/brand name)

(local/other name):
• Del País
• Raza Alistana-Sanabresa

The Alistana-Sanabresa is a recently amalgamated breed; the Alistana and Sanabresa breeds were combined in either 1981 (Mason, Encyclopedia 2016) or 1986 (Felius, 1995).

Originally triple-purpose cattle, the Alistana-Sanabresa is closely related to the Sayaguesa and the Mirandesa. Now a beef breed, they are known to produce high yields of good quality meat even on poor pasture. They are housed and given fodder only under extreme environmental conditions.

The Berciana is considered to be a variety of the Alistana-Sanabresa. The name Berciana also refers to Mirandesa cattle (a Portuguese breed) that are kept in Spain in El Beirzo in the northwest of Léon. Berciana are listed as either rare or extinct depending on the source.
