The Saavedreño has a coat color that varies from a Guernsey color (without the white patches) to a Jersey color.
The breed name ‘Saavedreño’ comes from the Saavedra experimental station. This is where selected Criollo cows (with above average milk performance) and bulls were brought to breed. Semen was then imported from other high-performance Criollo herds that were living in similar humid tropical environments in Cuba, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Brazil.
